Electrical Problems: A Troubleshooting Guide

Safety first. Safe homeowner steps, and when to call immediately.

Electrical problems range from annoying to dangerous, and telling the difference matters. These guides cover the three calls we run most — tripping breakers, dead outlets, flickering lights — with the safe steps you can take and the warning signs that mean call now.

The standing rule for everything electrical: you may reset a tripped breaker once, press a GFCI reset button, or change a bulb. You do not open the panel, remove outlet covers, or touch wiring. Everything beyond the safe list is our job.

The Three Problems We See Most

Each has its own guide with safe checks and likely causes:

Call Immediately If You See These

Some symptoms do not wait for a scheduled visit. Call (561) 786-1337 right away if you notice:

  • A burning smell from an outlet, switch, or the panel.
  • Sparking when you plug something in or flip a switch.
  • A breaker panel that is hot to the touch.
  • Scorch marks on an outlet or switch face.
  • Lights dimming severely or power surging across the whole house.

Storms Cause a Share of Our Calls

After an afternoon thunderstorm, we see the same pattern: part of the house dark, a GFCI that will not reset, a breaker that trips the moment it is reset. Surges damage breakers, GFCIs, and connected devices.

If your electrical problems started with a storm, say so when you call — it tells us what to look for. And ask about whole-home surge protection while we are there; it is the fix that prevents the repeat visit.

Common questions

Is it safe to reset a tripped breaker?

Once, yes. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. A breaker that will not stay on is protecting you from something.

Can I replace an outlet myself?

We do not recommend it. Outlet replacement looks simple, but miswired outlets — reversed polarity, bootleg grounds, overloaded boxes — are among the most common hazards we find. It is a quick job for an electrician.

How do I know if my home's wiring is unsafe?

An inspection is the real answer. Warning signs include warm outlets or switch plates, burning smells, frequent tripping, and two-prong outlets throughout an older home.
